Nádor utca 36: The House of the Rimamurány-Salgótarján Steelworks

Nádor utca 36 is a building located nearby the Parliament. It was designed by Artúr Meinig and built in 1901 for the Rimamurányi-Salgótarjáni Vasmű Rt. (Rimamurány-Salgótarján Steelworks), a huge company responsible for steel production in northern Hungary. The company, often nicknamed “Rima” had its headquarters in this building and rented out the rest. The name of the company is still visible in the ironwork in the staircase, which used to lead to its offices and are now used by the embassy of Kosovo.

This is a large house with three staircases. The one which led to the company’s office is obviously the most beautiful; the other two are much simpler. Visiting this house is also strange because its facade and some parts were freshly renovated, while others are in pretty bad condition. Nowadays, not only apartments but also many organizations and companies have their offices here.

  1. Amazing. What a huge amount of work they put into such buildings…

I have launched Buildings Tell Tales in 2019, and since then visited and photographed over 1000 old buildings in Budapest. My goal is not only to take photos but to uncover the interesting stories hidden behind the old walls. By linking the stories of ordinary people such as workers, students, merchants, and domestic workers to specific places, I want to make the past tangible. Old buildings should be preserved not only for their aesthetic value but also for the memories they hold and the stories they tell.
