Király utca 21: One of Budapest’s Most Elegant Staircases

Nestled within Király utca 21 stands one of Budapest’s most elegant staircases, housed within the oldest surviving building on the street. Crafted by Mihály Pollack for Ferenc Dlauchy, a prosperous locksmith and frequent collaborator of the architect, this architectural masterpiece has weathered the test of time. However, the same cannot be said for many neighboring buildings. Király utca 23 fell victim to bombing during World War II, while across the street, another apartment house designed by Pollack, though designated as a historical monument, was demolished in the 1990s to make room for a modern structure.

  1. Thanks for following Leighton Travels. I have just been leafing through your posts and have very much enjoyed these looks at classic buildings oozing with character and history. Buildings tell tales, indeed. We are also big fans of gorgeous old structures and can’t help but stop, look and maybe pop inside no matter where we are in the world. It’s nice to reacquaint myself with bits of Budapest, a city I once spent a long Christmas weekend in over 20 years ago. Thanks for introducing me to Mihály Pollack, I have just been doing some reading up on him.

I have launched Buildings Tell Tales in 2019, and since then visited and photographed over 1000 old buildings in Budapest. My goal is not only to take photos but to uncover the interesting stories hidden behind the old walls. By linking the stories of ordinary people such as workers, students, merchants, and domestic workers to specific places, I want to make the past tangible. Old buildings should be preserved not only for their aesthetic value but also for the memories they hold and the stories they tell.
