Frankel Leó út 11: Where Neo-Renaissance meets Art Nouveau

Frankel út 11 is an apartment house with two distinct facades: one facing Frankel Leó út (where the entrance is situated) and the other facing Lipthay utca. The two sides of this narrow building are quite different. The facade on Lipthay utca is an interesting blend of neo-Renaissance and Art Nouveau elements. Designed by the renowned architect Ignác Alpár, the house was constructed in 1898.

Ignác Alpár (1855-1928) was a leading figure in Hungarian architecture at the turn of the 20th century. A master of the eclectic style, Alpár is known for incorporating elements from various historical periods into his designs. His most famous work is arguably Vajdahunyad Castle, a sprawling complex in the Városliget that features architectural styles ranging from Roman to Baroque. Alpár also designed several other important buildings in Budapest, including the Hungarian National Bank and the Anker Palace.

Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to visit the interior of Frankel utca 11 so far. However, I hope to do so in the near future and share some interesting photos with you!

I have launched Buildings Tell Tales in 2019, and since then visited and photographed over 1000 old buildings in Budapest. My goal is not only to take photos but to uncover the interesting stories hidden behind the old walls. By linking the stories of ordinary people such as workers, students, merchants, and domestic workers to specific places, I want to make the past tangible. Old buildings should be preserved not only for their aesthetic value but also for the memories they hold and the stories they tell.
