József utca 3: The House of the Hungarian Association for Disabled and Retired Workers

József utca 3 is an apartment house located in the 8th district, originally built for the Hungarian Association for Disabled and Retired Workers, established in Budapest in 1893. This building, inaugurated in 1905, was constructed for the “Hungarian Association for Disabled and Retired Workers” (Magyarországi Munkások Rokkant és Nyugdíj Egylete), according to the plans of Gyula Kauser. This organization played a significant role in the development of social welfare in Hungary. At the time of the construction of this apartment house, it had 31,000 contributing members and 115 regional offices.

A fresco painted by Dezső Kölber adorned the facade but has unfortunately completely disappeared. However, pictures of the original facade and fresco were published in the Vasárnapi Újság newspaper on January 28, 1906.

I have launched Buildings Tell Tales in 2019, and since then visited and photographed over 1000 old buildings in Budapest. My goal is not only to take photos but to uncover the interesting stories hidden behind the old walls. By linking the stories of ordinary people such as workers, students, merchants, and domestic workers to specific places, I want to make the past tangible. Old buildings should be preserved not only for their aesthetic value but also for the memories they hold and the stories they tell.
