Szondi utca 75 : Decaying Art Nouveau Architecture in Terézváros

Situated just a stone’s throw away from the renowned Sonnenberg-ház at Munkácsy Mihály utca 23, Szondi utca 75 stands as another remarkable testament to Art Nouveau architecture in Budapest, both buildings were designed by the same architect, Albert Kálmán Kőrössy.

Built in 1906, this building was once home to Vilmos Nagybaczoni Nagy, a high-ranking officer in the Royal Hungarian Army. He later served as Minister of Defence from September 24, 1942, to June 12, 1943. During his time in office, he worked hard to improve conditions for both troops and Jewish forced labor battalions.

After Hungary was freed, Nagy faced tough times under the new government. They took away his home and stopped his pension. He had to find work as a gardener. In 1965, he was honored as the first Hungarian named Righteous Among the Nations by Yad Vashem for saving many Jewish lives during his time as Minister of Defence. Today, a plaque on the building reminds us of his bravery.

I have launched Buildings Tell Tales in 2019, and since then visited and photographed over 1000 old buildings in Budapest. My goal is not only to take photos but to uncover the interesting stories hidden behind the old walls. By linking the stories of ordinary people such as workers, students, merchants, and domestic workers to specific places, I want to make the past tangible. Old buildings should be preserved not only for their aesthetic value but also for the memories they hold and the stories they tell.
