The Műteremház: An Art Nouveau Haven for Hungarian Artists

The Art Nouveau ‘Műteremház’ (or ‘Atelier House’) is building designed by Gyula Kosztolányi-Kann and completed in 1903. Located at Kelenhegyi út 12-14 in the 11th district of Budapest, this house was initially used solely as an art studio, and the living spaces were separated from the studios after the war. Typically, galleries were established within the spacious rooms, taking advantage of the 7-meter-high ceilings.

Throughout its history, notable Hungarian artists have worked in this building, including Béla Czóbel, Ignác Kokas, Viktor Madarász, József Rippl-Rónai, and Erzsébet Vojnich. The ‘Műteremház’ stands as a historical space where these artists once created, contributing to the vibrant artistic heritage of Budapest.

I have launched Buildings Tell Tales in 2019, and since then visited and photographed over 1000 old buildings in Budapest. My goal is not only to take photos but to uncover the interesting stories hidden behind the old walls. By linking the stories of ordinary people such as workers, students, merchants, and domestic workers to specific places, I want to make the past tangible. Old buildings should be preserved not only for their aesthetic value but also for the memories they hold and the stories they tell.
