The Forgotten Jazz Singer : Tibor Weygand’s Budapest Residence

This charming apartment house, constructed in 1931-32 by architect Tibor Hübner, is situated on Tas Vezér utca in the 11th district of Budapest. Our visit to this building was prompted by its association with Tibor Weygand, who resided here after World War II. While his name may not be widely recognized today, even in Hungary, it’s unfortunate as he was an incredible singer who played a significant role in popularizing jazz in the country.

Tibor Weygand stood as one of the most beloved Hungarian singers during the 1920s-1930s, with his fame extending beyond national borders. He performed concerts in London, Paris, Berlin, and some of his songs were recorded by the renowned American label, Columbia Records.

I have launched Buildings Tell Tales in 2019, and since then visited and photographed over 1000 old buildings in Budapest. My goal is not only to take photos but to uncover the interesting stories hidden behind the old walls. By linking the stories of ordinary people such as workers, students, merchants, and domestic workers to specific places, I want to make the past tangible. Old buildings should be preserved not only for their aesthetic value but also for the memories they hold and the stories they tell.
