Dózsa György út 138-142 : Social Housing Project from the Early 20th Century

This expansive apartment house, located in the 13th district at Dózsa György út 138-142, was designed by Béla Rerrich and constructed in 1911-1912 as part of a housing development plan initiated by Mayor István Bárczy. Between 1909 and 1912, over 20 such large apartment houses were erected across Budapest, a response to the rapidly expanding population. These structures, divided into small flats, housed as many inhabitants as smaller villages; for instance, the one I visited had over 900 residents in the 1960s.

As part of this comprehensive program to address housing needs, more than 50 schools were also built in Budapest during István Bárczy’s term. I have previously explored several houses constructed under this initiative and have found them to be well-designed and built. Although primarily intended for the lower-middle class and the working class, these structures were created by renowned architects of that era.

I have launched Buildings Tell Tales in 2019, and since then visited and photographed over 1000 old buildings in Budapest. My goal is not only to take photos but to uncover the interesting stories hidden behind the old walls. By linking the stories of ordinary people such as workers, students, merchants, and domestic workers to specific places, I want to make the past tangible. Old buildings should be preserved not only for their aesthetic value but also for the memories they hold and the stories they tell.
