Hidden Hungary : The Abandoned “Weisz-house” in Miskolc

An abandoned house in Miskolc located at Zsolca Kapu 7. It was built around 1909-1910 for the Weisz family. The ground floor housed shops, while the first and second floors had apartments. When I visited it for the first time in April 2023 the gate stood open but when I went back in November there was a gate on the locked.

Interestingly, unlike nearby buildings destroyed in 1944-45 bombings, the Weisz-house endured only minor damages. In 2008, it was recognized as a historical monument and recently changed ownership.

I have launched Buildings Tell Tales in 2019, and since then visited and photographed over 1000 old buildings in Budapest. My goal is not only to take photos but to uncover the interesting stories hidden behind the old walls. By linking the stories of ordinary people such as workers, students, merchants, and domestic workers to specific places, I want to make the past tangible. Old buildings should be preserved not only for their aesthetic value but also for the memories they hold and the stories they tell.
