Some locals have given the name ‘Sing Sing’ to this apartment building situated at Nagy Lajos Király útja 104, drawing a parallel with the infamous prison in the United States. Sadly, this nickname depicts the atmosphere of this house quite accurately! The majority of its apartments remain vacant, with the entrance walled off to prevent squatters from entering. Despite repeated media reports of imminent renovations, no progress has been made thus far. Meanwhile, a new building is being constructed on a neighboring plot of land.
Similarly to other low-income housing projects from the 1920s and 1930s (like in Hős utca, Cserei utca, and Tárna utca), the residents have endured challenging living conditions since the construction of these buildings. Despite promises made by politicians across different regimes and political parties, a solution has yet to be found. Interestingly, this apartment building, built in the late 1920s, was commissioned by the ‘Soap factory supplying Hungarian railway workers’ (Magyar vasutasokat ellátó szappangyár). The architect behind this apartment building is Zsigmond Sziklai, who also designed the iconic Párisi Nagyáruház, a grand department store which was located at Andrássy út 39.
