Modernist architecture in Budapest : Nagy Lajos király útja 104

Located in the 14th district of Budapest, Zugló, this modernist apartment house stands on Nagy Lajos Király útja and was built in 1932. Designed by Gábor Krausz, who is known for his work on various modernist buildings in the city, this house was built for Henrik Klein and Ignác Beck.

At the time of its completion, the building offered a range of 1 and 2-bedroom apartments, each equipped with bathrooms, which were intended to be rented out. However, it seems that they encountered some challenges in finding tenants for all the flats. Consequently, they resorted to publishing numerous advertisements in newspapers until 1935 in an effort to attract occupants.

I have launched Buildings Tell Tales in 2019, and since then visited and photographed over 1000 old buildings in Budapest. My goal is not only to take photos but to uncover the interesting stories hidden behind the old walls. By linking the stories of ordinary people such as workers, students, merchants, and domestic workers to specific places, I want to make the past tangible. Old buildings should be preserved not only for their aesthetic value but also for the memories they hold and the stories they tell.
