Nagymező utca 18 : The House of the Duna Insurance Company

Upon entering Nagymező utca 18, an apartment house located at the corner of Nagymező utca and Andrássy Avenue in the 6th district of Budapest, you will notice a large iron “D” that reflects the building’s history.

The ironwork of this building preserves the memory of the Duna Insurance Company, which had its headquarters here. The building was completed in 1876, and the following year, it was purchased by Mór Wahrmann, who became the first Jew to be chosen as a member of the Hungarian Parliament in 1869. In 1907, the aforementioned Austrian insurance company established its Hungarian branch in this building. Interestingly, the Duna Insurance Company, known as “Donau Versicherung” in German, established in 1867, still exists in Austria and is part of the Vienna Insurance Group.

Although this building is in a pretty bad condition many of the original elements have been preserved.

I have launched Buildings Tell Tales in 2019, and since then visited and photographed over 1000 old buildings in Budapest. My goal is not only to take photos but to uncover the interesting stories hidden behind the old walls. By linking the stories of ordinary people such as workers, students, merchants, and domestic workers to specific places, I want to make the past tangible. Old buildings should be preserved not only for their aesthetic value but also for the memories they hold and the stories they tell.
