Hidden Sculptures and Statues in Budapest

Numerous websites, Facebook, and Instagram profiles already document Budapest’s statues. In this category, I will focus on sculptures hidden inside buildings and the fascinating stories behind them.

This headless Venus stands in the courtyard of Szív utca 18. In 1980, she “wrote” an article for a magazine. Read her story here.

This statue of a woman, waiting for someone, gazes at passersby on Thököly utca. Many urban legends are linked to her

Behind the unappealing facade of Visegrádi utca 4 hides a beautiful staircase adorned with statues on each floor of the house!

A stone dog guards the entrance of Thököly utca 61, the house with a balcony where a woman gazes at passersby.

The statue, which guards the staircase of the partially abandoned building at Múzeum körút 19, was partially wrapped in plastic, perhaps to protect her during renovation works.

Hernád utca 19 is guarded by this mysterious creature who has witnessed many stories from the house’s past.

I have launched Buildings Tell Tales in 2019, and since then visited and photographed over 1000 old buildings in Budapest. My goal is not only to take photos but to uncover the interesting stories hidden behind the old walls. By linking the stories of ordinary people such as workers, students, merchants, and domestic workers to specific places, I want to make the past tangible. Old buildings should be preserved not only for their aesthetic value but also for the memories they hold and the stories they tell.
