A Boat in the the Courtyard of Dob utca 80!

In the courtyard of Dob utca 80, you can find a “ladik,” a flat-bottomed boat used in shallow waters. This building houses Fortuna Patika, a very old pharmacy. Inside, you’ll discover beautiful furniture that is worth a visit.

During the 1940s, the pharmacy had a famous owner named Elemér Kocsuba, who also resided in the house. He was the son of a pharmacist and followed in his father’s footsteps, studying the same profession. However, Elemér was a multitalented individual. He excelled in youth tennis, becoming a champion, and also found success as an ice-skater.

Moreover, Elemér possessed musical talent and was skilled in playing the piano and organ. He was a student of Zoltán Kodály. Additionally, Elemér ventured into the world of filmmaking under the name Elemér Kassay. One of his most renowned films is “120-as tempó,” featuring famous actors from the interwar period, such as Lili Muráti and Gyula Kabos.

Before the war, Elemér experienced a serious car accident that resulted in a broken skull. To remedy this, a platinum implant was used for his surgery, which held such high value that he was not permitted to leave Hungary after 1945.

I have launched Buildings Tell Tales in 2019, and since then visited and photographed over 1000 old buildings in Budapest. My goal is not only to take photos but to uncover the interesting stories hidden behind the old walls. By linking the stories of ordinary people such as workers, students, merchants, and domestic workers to specific places, I want to make the past tangible. Old buildings should be preserved not only for their aesthetic value but also for the memories they hold and the stories they tell.
